Google Developer Day
storyboards / animation / compositing
This is a cool project I worked on during my time at HOPR! Our objective was to create an event opener for Google Developer Day at GDC. I’m usually animating so it was fun to try my storyboard chops. Had a great time seeing a project grow from beginning to end.
Our goal was to come up with a narrative that included Google’s gaming solutions (create, connect, scale). One idea we had was the “napkin”, where we would see a progression of a game on a table from a fixed overhead shot. The short originally started as more of a motion piece, but it slowly became a very fun cel animated short.
We had a lot of creative freedom, so once I storyboarded this version (one fixed camera), Kevin Li and I collaborated on pushing the short further. We experimented with more camera moves and going into the game world.
Google’s minimal design aesthetic encouraged us to keep to simple silhouettes, keeping the characters to two tones at most. This way we could focus on the animation and light-hearted quality of our story.
